Multi-layers soil mapping is the first link in Precision Agriculture. It offers a very important and
multiple levers of agronomic progress.

Electro-Conductivity, what is it ?

To map the soil, CoRHIZE uses a technology based on Electrical Conductivity. The Electrical Conductivity of a soil characterizes its ability to facilitate the propagation of an electromagnetic field. It varies according to several criteria such as texture, structure, porosity, depth, organic matter, which also influence the Useful Reserve (RU) and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). Electrical Conductivity is therefore used here as a revealer of the intraparcellar variability of the soil. It is a very reliable parameter and can be used on all types of soils. In addition, the conductivity gradients in a plot are almost stable over time. Mapping is a long-term and profitable investment.

               

Our specificities?

1 ) CoRHIZE operates with its own measuring and recording equipment :

  • a light and non-destructive wheel assembly, allowing passage on bare ground, on recent sowing, or on young crops without any damage, on any type of soil, even low lift.
  • A patented technology from the Canadian Geophysical Instrument Specialist DualEM measuring 4 depths simultaneously for better vision of the colonized horizons by the roots (0-25cm, 0-50cm, 0-80cm, 0-160cm). The segmentation of the two layers 0-25 cm and 0-50 cm is all the more relevant as they are the layers most explored by the roots.
  • a very high resolution continuously recorded centimetric GPS measurements and positions



2) A restitution of the cartographies according to the ends:

  • the « gross » maps of the four depths, the centimetric cartography of the slopes and the% of slopes, on paper documents or computer files in formats compatible with any Agricultural or General Geographical Information System, or of modern parcel software.
  • zoning for soil sampling and / or sounding to perform fertility and potential mapping
  • zoning to qualify reserve differences, help define homogeneous irrigation areas and set up probes for irrigation management which is a core competence of CoRHIZE


3. CoRHIZE support:

Why measure « intra plot » variability ?


Intraplot variability reflects the heterogeneity of one or more parameters within the same parcel.
These differences in environment (texture, fertility, pH, RAW, soiliness, ...) and performance (biomass, yield, quality, ...) need to be studied to act distinctly and draw the best technical and economic potential of each square meter of the plot . This is the ultimate goal of Precision Farming, to bring what is needed where and when it is needed.


Soil mapping is the starting point of Precision Agriculture because it focuses on the sole soil parameter without interference from others.
Soil quality is the first factor influencing yield. The mapping of soil conductivity has multiple applications for :

  • precision farming :
    • modulation of seedling densities
    • modulation and optimization of fertilization
    • choice of varieties, rootstocks, ...
  • Precision Irrigation :
    • positioning capacitive probes in profile in the most relevant areas for irrigation control
      sizing of irrigation equipment
    • Variation Rate Variation Rate Irrigation (VRI) of reels, pivots and ramps
  • Experimentation :
    • validation of test plots
    • multiplying the power of statistical results
    • superposition and cross-referencing of georeferenced multisource data (yield, NDVI, ...)

NOTE: If vegetation mapping is done by satellites or drones, multi-depth ground mapping can only be
performed by specific ground-based measurement tools.

Is it absolutely necessary to use automated modulation tools to use soil mapping?


Soil mapping has multiple applications. If its optimization requires automated modulation tools (fertilizer spreader with on-board weighing and modulation, seed drills with density modulation, pivots with modulation of doses, etc.), these are not however required to start valorising a cartography of soil.


Soil mapping brings first and foremost a better knowledge of the agronomic potential of these plots. By bringing them closer to observations in the field, from historical ones, it makes it possible to ask good questions and generally to bring the right answers. The implementation of corrective actions can then be done in manual modulation, although impractical; either by service providers or growers Cooperation who are equipped with automated modulation tools. The lack of automated modulation tools on the farm should not be a hindrance to improving soil knowledge.
